Overview

The Maintenance Assistant performs routine duties in the maintenance and repair of Zoo buildings, equipment, utilities systems and other areas/projects as assigned. This position also requires work on weekends, holidays and occasional overtime as deemed necessary by the Maintenance Manager or department supervisor. Upholds the mission and values established the East Bay Zoological Society (the “Zoo”) and adheres to policies and procedures as set forth by the Zoo.

Responsibilities

1.Inspect mechanical devices and the repair of mechanical devices daily.

2.Inspect electrical devices and the repair of electrical devices daily.

3.Assist with new construction of new exhibits and/or similar projects.

4.Service sewer lines as needed.

5.Change fixtures as needed.

6.Set up and fabrication work on caging, exhibits, equipment, etc.

7.Service H.V.A.C. filters, etc.

8.Demonstrates superior customer service with customers, both internal (i.e. co-workers) and external (vendors, visitors, customers, etc).

9.Demonstrates knowledge of, and supports, the East Bay Zoological Society’s mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of behavior.

10.Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Required Capabilities

 

Must be willing to read, understand manuals and order parts for the job at hand

Ability to exercise sound judgment, be a self-starter and work with little or no supervision.

Basic knowledge/skill/ability needed in the mechanical trade.

Basic knowledge/skill/ability needed in the plumbing trade.

Basic knowledge/skill/ability needed in the electrical trade.

Basic knowledge/skill/ability needed in the carpentry trade.

Basic knowledge/skill/ability needed in the welding trade.

Basic knowledge of general construction practices.

Able to bend and twist, lift, stand, kneel, sit, walk, bend, stoop and speak regularly and for long periods of time (8 hour shifts)

 

Required Education

High school diploma or GED or greater

Trade school experience a plus

Required Experience

5+ years in the building maintenance trade with some back ground in mechanical and welding trades

Must be willing to attend night classes as needed
